What a player Marcus Trescothick was. He dominated the Bowlers the World over on almost all the pitches with ease in both forms of the game. He was very strong on both sides of the wicket and had a set plan to tackle any Bowler. He was very highly rated by his opponents. He has played some remarkable innings for England. But on most occasions, when he scores a hundred, England used to go on to loose the game. But yet his services need special credit. Here’s a look back into Marcus Trescothick’s career.

Marcus Trescothick made his debut for his county, Somerset, at a tender age of 17 in 1993. In his very next season, he showed his class. In 1994, he cracked his first fifty against Hampshire and then went on to score his maiden hundred against Surrey. In 1996-97, he was awarded ” The Most Promising Young Player ” for his constant performance in the domestic circuit.
In 1998, Duncan Fletcher, the later England Coach, watched Marcus Trscothick smash 167 on a slippery Taunton pitch. He next best score was 50 in that game. In July 8, 2000, he made his ODI debut against Zimbabwe and scored 79 in a losing cause.
He then made his Test debut against West Indies on August 3, 2000 and scored a fluent 66 and 39 not out at Old Trafford. On February 24, 2001, he scored his maiden ton against Sri Lanka at Galle. The conditions were very challenging and even after this knock, England went on to loose the game. He then went on to play some inspirational knocks for England. His contribution during the 2005 Ashes drama was one of the finest examples of his capacity.
The downfall started in 2006 when he returned home from India tour citing personal reasons. He then made a come back in April the same year raging an one-handed assault on Kent so as to get into the National team for the home series against Sri Lanka.
Later he makes himself unavailable for events like the tour to Australia, the World Cup and also the T20 World Cup even after a good show in the County Circuit. In September 2007, he speaks about his illness for the first time which threatened to end his career. He finally called it a day in March 2008.
His career has been a very good one and he has given every bit he can for England Cricket. He will be missed by his mates who have played along with him.
