Ricky Ponting brought up his 35th test century in grand style and also helped his team who were suffering from the early jolts to post 301/4 at the end of first day’s play. Ponting scored 158 before falling to a short one from Dwayne Bravo which was stunningly caught by Parchement at square leg. That was the sort of luck which the West Indies required to remove Ponting as he was in a very good tough.

After the initial set-back, Australia came back through a couple of good partnerships between Ponting and Michael Hussey and then between Ponting and Brad Hodge. Hodge also looked very comfortable at the crease. Ponting left at about 11 minutes before the scheduled close of play and that brought in night watchman Mitchelle Johnson who remained unbeaten on 1.

Ponting fell 66 runs short of the landmark of 10,000 test runs. In the process, he went past Brian Lara and Sunil Gavaskar on the list of century makers and only Sachin Tendulkar is ahead of him with 39 centuries to his name.

As for West Indies, spinner Amit Jaggernauth made his debut and got his test cap. He also accounted for Michael Hussey’s wicket who becomes Jaggernauth’s first test victim.
