Ashok Mankad Passes Away

Former Indian Batsman, Ashok Mankad died at his residence in Mumbai peacefully while sleeping on Friday Morning. He was 61 years old. His death came as a shock to many as he had no reported ailments. He is the son of the famous Cricketer Vinoo Mankad.

But Ashok Mankad was not as successful as his father was. He played 22 tests and scored 991 runs between 1969 and 1978. He played both higher up the order as an opener to as low as number 8. The series against Bill Lawry’s Australian team which was his first season was a memorable one where he scored four half centuries which included 97 which was his highest score.

He has also played 1 ODI against England. His exploits in the Ranji Trophy was quite phenomenal. He was a potent leader for the Mumbai Team. Here’s the list of his achievements in the Ranji Trophy :

  • Mankad scored 6619 runs (at 76.08), making him the 12th highest scorer in the tournament.
  • A haul of 22 hundreds put him seventh on the list of most century-makers.
  • He led Mumbai to victory in two consecutive seasons, 1974-75 and 1975-76.
  • Another highlight of his career was his 265 against Delhi in the 1980-81 final.
  • He also coached the Mumbai side to the title in 1999-2000.
